on a barely-related note, is it strange that I'm always sort of uncomfortable being complimented? like I appreciate it and all but I never quite know how to respond.

Nah. There's no real good way to respond to compliments, because you either downplay how awesome you are, or accept it and people tend to look down on the latter for some reason.

I always just say something along the lines of "oh, thank you!" and change the subject, haha.
