marie, infp and awkward turtle extraordinaire. i spend a lot of time on the computer but somehow nothing ever gets done. i'm currently attending a small liberal arts college on america's west coast, and most of this journal is about my irl existence. i really like getting to know people, so feel free to add me! just let me know a little bit about yourself first, i don't friend random adds.

in other news, i made another thread at the holiday meme (NOT MY FAULT OKAY). also i am utterly hopeless at social interaction, news at 11.

my thread at the holiday love meme

i've had insomnia in the worst way this week :| i'm tired but i just don't have the motivation to go to sleep. also i'm trying to figure out whether i want to go home on wednesday (which is the current plan) or stick around until friday. either way i'm done with my finals on monday so it's basically a question of how long do i want to lay around the house in a semi-drunken stupor. although i think i might be more productive writing-wise if i stay here? also tbh i probably shouldn't spend any more time with my family than i have to. but i also probably shouldn't be making any decisions at 4am.

the good news is that at some point over winter break rachel and i (and katie?) are having an adventure time-and-alcohol party \o/ although it'll probably devolve into an alcohol-and-skype party, lol.

[livejournal.com profile] elapses just posted this on her journal and i think it is possibly the best lj meme i've seen. plus i've been really bad at updating and at being on lj in general. so yes, have at it!

Here's how it's going to work:
1. You ask me a question. Any question, no matter how random and/or inappropriate.
2. I answer it and ask you a question of the same type.
3. You answer that question and I ask you another question.
4. Et cetera, ad infinitum. Or until we get sick of it. You know, whatever.
misters: ([ ☃ ]oh my gaaaaaawd)

current dilemma: books or movies? OR NEITHER BECAUSE I ALREADY SPENT $80 ON FRIDAY

sorry about posting twice today, i've been meaning to make a real journal post for a while and this is the first chance where i've had both the motivation and the time to do it. SO.

first things first: i am stealing [livejournal.com profile] annalouwho's getting-to-know-me activity!

Name one of my fandoms (check the profile) and I will tell you my:
Favorite ship
Least favorite ship
Favorite character(s)
Favorite episode
(A) Favorite quote

my fandoms are, in no particular order, avatar: the last airbender, buffy, criminal minds, firefly, game of thrones, harry potter, suits, true blood, and probably lots of other stuff i'm forgetting about. i'll also answer for kpop (using smtown + yge groups - you can ask by company or by band) although idk how to twist the favorite episode category for that.

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle at Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

if this bill passes, every time the word "person" is used in a law, it will include fertilized eggs. that means that all of the following will be outlawed:
- abortion
- the morning after pill
- IUDs
- stem cell research and any related medicines
- drug testing on cloned human tissues and cell lines (including established cell lines)
- cloning of human organs for transplant and research into such
- IVF and storage of frozen blastocysts

we cannot allow this to happen. please, please, please do whatever you can to stop this bill.

okay my little thing of melatonin ran out this week, so i went to target to get more. this meant switching from tablets that were 500 mcg (.5 mg) to ones that were 3 mg. hypothetically since the new tablets are 6x what i'm used to i should have been completely knocked out, right?

FALSE. I WAS IN BED FOR 7 HOURS AND GOT ABOUT 5 HOURS OF SLEEP. which wouldn't have been that bad except i kept WAKING UP so really i got 2 hours of sleep and then 3 hours of sleep, which always makes me feel really grumpy and gross. plus i have to do wake-ups* in an hour and then i have to go to a doctor's appointment at 10:30 and then i have class from 12:50-4 and then dinner at 5:30, all-house at 6:30, a guest lecturer to attend at 7, and finally work from 8:30-10. IN SIMPLER TERMS, i have been awake since 4AM and unless i skip one of my classes to take a nap, i will be awake until at least 10:30PM :||||||||||| and i really hate skipping classes, especially since the two i have today are my wgs classes and i really enjoy both of them. and i can't just take something (short of, like, cocaine) to keep myself awake because caffeine doesn't affect me at all until i get to the point where i'm shaking and have headaches.

TL;DR MY LIFE: SO HARD but for real this sucks

*there's this antiquated law in oregon that says if there are so many unrelated women (i think ~10?) living in the same house together and they all have their own bedrooms, the house is considered a brothel. there are 40+ women living in my sorority house right now, so obvs we are in violation of that law, which means instead of everyone having their own bedrooms we have these giant rooms with lots and lots of bunk beds where everyone sleeps (called a sleeping porch). it's actually really great and i love it a lot, but because there are so many people all trying to sleep, you're not allowed to have alarms go off between 6-8AM on weekdays. instead, we have this little tag system where you say what time you want to be woken up and then whoever is on duty for that day will come around and wake you up personally. long story short, every two weeks or so i have to get up at 5:45 and then go around and wake people up for two hours.

so i'm taking a creative writing class this semester that requires me to write a 13-15 page story (or two stories that add up to 15 pages) and i have no ideas :( so i am calling upon my kind and generous flist to give me some prompts! they can be fanfic-related (although i would change the names (and probably the setting) for my class) or just general; pictures, songs, poems, scenarios, specific pairings, etc. are all welcomed. plus even if i don't end up turning it into a long story, i may end up writing a little bit for you anyway so have at it!

thanks \o/

ps i have been reading this all day and i can't stop laughing omg ty [livejournal.com profile] awoken for sharing it with me

i mostly removed journals that are inactive and/or owned by people i haven't spoken to in a long time, but if you'd like to be put back on, let me know! this is also an opportunity for you to defriend me even if i didn't remove you - no hard feelings :)

i really encourage all the (incredibly intelligent and eloquent!) writers i have on my flist to try this out. at the very least, i want to link this so everyone can check out what people are writing!

speaking of awesome women, i watched itty bitty titty committee in my feminism, gender & society class today and HNNNNG. since coming back to school i've been weirdly straight, but goddamn that movies brought back all my lady feelings. especially aggie and meat and calvin omg butchy girls/transmen are so fucking hot. ALSO CAN WE DISCUSS HOW JENNY SHIZUMU IS THE MOST ATTRACTIVE PERSON EVER okay i'm going to stop but basically ladies

AND SPEAKING OF ATTRACTIVE LADIES, i apparently have a Thing for young female english professors because i have the biggest crush on my thinking sex professor. i'm also going to see if i can request her as my advisor because ughhhh she's amazing. it has nothing to do with my attraction to her (honestly!) but i can't say that's a downside.

aaaaaand speaking of thinking sex, i'm enjoying it so far but it's also hard for me to bite my tongue when people say ignorant shit, and people say a lot of ignorant shit in that class. not in a malicious way, just in an...ignorant way. idk, we'll see how it goes.

ANYWAY I GOTTA GO ugh i am so incoherent today.
