Aug. 17th, 2010 09:18 amnormally I'd post something like this to my political filter* but I think this is important enough that everyone should read it.
the "Do"s and "Don't"s of handling your privilege, as written by
shiplizard. this comment is in response to this question about how to act as a privileged person by
karmaschild, which inspired a lot of good answers as well as some wank (because, well, it's sf_d). the original question was about race (i.e. how a white person should behave when in a discussion about race), but the linked comment expands on that a little and really is general enough to apply to any privilege.
so you should all read that and keep it in mind whenever you're interacting with someone who may not be as privileged as you are, or even with someone who is/is moreso. recognizing privilege is, imo, one of the most important things you can do to improve yourself, and this comment breaks it down into something that's very comprehensible and easily rememberable.
in other news, I'm going to go see Inception again today! in honor of this, I'm going to rec you all my favorite thread from the kinkmeme: Inception as Princess Bride, starring Eames as Buttercup and Arthur as Wesley and etc. it's so good~
*to new friends: a while back I did a poll** about what filters people on my flist would want to be on. you're all currently on a tinychat filter and a fandom filter, but that's it.
**if that link doesn't work correctly (as in doesn't allow you to vote), you can go to the original entry here instead. the entry also explains what each filter means if you're confused.
