normally I'd post something like this to my political filter* but I think this is important enough that everyone should read it.

the "Do"s and "Don't"s of handling your privilege, as written by [livejournal.com profile] shiplizard. this comment is in response to this question about how to act as a privileged person by [livejournal.com profile] karmaschild, which inspired a lot of good answers as well as some wank (because, well, it's sf_d). the original question was about race (i.e. how a white person should behave when in a discussion about race), but the linked comment expands on that a little and really is general enough to apply to any privilege.

so you should all read that and keep it in mind whenever you're interacting with someone who may not be as privileged as you are, or even with someone who is/is moreso. recognizing privilege is, imo, one of the most important things you can do to improve yourself, and this comment breaks it down into something that's very comprehensible and easily rememberable.

in other news, I'm going to go see Inception again today! in honor of this, I'm going to rec you all my favorite thread from the kinkmeme: Inception as Princess Bride, starring Eames as Buttercup and Arthur as Wesley and etc. it's so good~

*to new friends: a while back I did a poll** about what filters people on my flist would want to be on. you're all currently on a tinychat filter and a fandom filter, but that's it.
**if that link doesn't work correctly (as in doesn't allow you to vote), you can go to the original entry here instead. the entry also explains what each filter means if you're confused.

I am posting this video because it is hilarious and everyone should watch it. just not at work or around parents because it is, uh. very gay. lots of (really ripped) men in their underwear and bare asses and etc. it's great :')

this video breaks my layout :( )

(if you're the type of person who likes to analyze everything (aka me), I can link you to an short piece about this video that I found pretty interesting. jsyk.)

I lost my chapstick and now I can't stop biting the skin off my lips ;___;

today has been really weird emotionally. I started out the day practically in tears (except, you know. not.) and then when I went upstairs and put on my makeup it was like I just shut everything off. and then I went to school and was really meh until lunch, where we had an awesome conversation and I laughed a lot and then in bio everyone was just crazy and idek. now I'm back to normal, but it's been very weird. part of it was probably a lack of food (which will be happening all week, yaaaaaay :|) and of sleep. so we'll see how things are tomorrow (especially since it's English, and won't that be tense).

Sharing is Caring: for one week, recommend/share:
Day one: a song
Day two: a picture
Day three: a book/ebook/fanfic
Day four: a site

Day five: a youtube clip
Day six: a quote
Day seven: whatever tickles your fancy

I don't feel like going on youtube and looking anything up, so for Rachel's (re-)viewing pleasure:

44. Things That Cannot Be Compared

Summer and winter. Night and day. Rain and sunshine. Youth and age. A person's laughter and his anger. Black and white. Love and hatred. The little indigo plant and the great philodendron. Rain and mist.
When one has stopped loving somebody, one feels that he has become someone else, even though he is still the same person.
In a garden full of evergreens the crows are all asleep. Then, towards the middle of the night, the crows in one of the trees suddenly wake up in a great flurry and start flapping about. Their unrest spreads to the other trees, and soon all the birds have been startled from their sleep and are cawing in alarm. How different from the same crows in daytime!

45. To Meet One's Lover

To meet one's lover summer is indeed the right season. True, the nights are very short, and dawn creeps up before one has had a wink of sleep. Since all the lattices have been left open, one can lie and look out at the garden in the cool morning air. There are still a few endearments to exchange before the man takes his leave, and the lovers are murmuring to each other when suddenly there is a loud noise. For a moment they are certain they have been discovered; but it is only the caw of a crow flying past in the garden.
In the winter, when it is very cold and one lies buried under the bedclothes listening to one's lover's endearments, it is delightful to hear the booming of a temple gong, which seems to come from the bottom of a deep well. The first cry of the birds, whose beaks are still tucked under their wings, is also strange and muffled. Then one bird after another takes up the call. How pleasant it is to lie there listening as the sound becomes clearer and clearer!

johncmayer: For one week, no texting, no Twitter, email only from computer and cell phone for calls ONLY. Could you do it?
johncmayer: Consider trying it with me. January 1-8. Let's get our minds out of the Matrix and see what it's like. Stay tuned...
I am interested.
